Feed me In Hawaii
When someone goes on a vacation, the best part of a vacation, besides the beautiful sites, always seems to be eating the local cuisine. Whether it be a hole-in-the-wall you just stumble across or a big restaurant that is very well known in the area, the food of the locals is always an exciting way to experience the culture of a particular area. Klaeo’s Bar and grill is nestled in the small town of Pahoa just south of Hilo in the Puna District. Kaleos is Honolulu magazines silver Hale ‘Aina award winner for the Big Island Restaurant 2 years in a row. This small little restaurant is becoming a go to for authentic style cuisine of the islands. One could sit on the balcony and watch as people walk by, or enjoy sitting inside with live entertainment of music and hula dancing.
When it comes to the food at Kaleos, there is a mix of different types of food from traditional pork dishes, burgers, and salads , to fresh fish that are brought in every morning from the local fish market. There is nothing better then fresh fish, and their desserts are amazing. When having to pick something off the menu to talk about it is rather hard. The first item I will recommend is the Kalua Pork won tons. They are crispy won tons stuffed with a sweet juicy kalua pork that has been cooked in the ground for days that Hawaii is known for with a side of sweet and sour sauce. This simple dish reflects the Hawaiian culture mixing with a little bit of Asian influence. The second thing I am going to talk about is The entre, if I had to pick one item to recommend for the main course, I would say my top pick if they have it available is the fresh seared ono with a Lili koi unagi drizzle and a side of wasabi sweet potato mash and arugula. To say this is a dish to die for is an understatement. The taste of this dish is a balanced mix for sweet and spicy on a tender white fish with purple sweet potatoes. The only down side is that the fish is very dependent on what the fisherman catch. But if they have any ono available I highly recommend it. Last but not least, if you have saved room, I would highly recommend the Lili koi cheesecake always prepared daily. When you bite into thing big piece of heaven you get a heavenly blend of guava and passion fruit that is hard to put down. For those of you who don’t know Lili koi is a passion fruit used in a lot of Hawaiian deserts and drinks due to the sweet and tart tendencies.
Over all if you are ever on the Big island of Hawaii and want somewhere good to eat I highly recommend visiting Klaeos, if I could eat at this restaurant every day for the rest of my life I would. To say I give this restaurant a 10 out of 10 stars is not even close to enough. I could never say enough great things about this restaurant. The atmosphere is welcoming, the service is top notch, and the food is outstanding! What more could one want in a night on the town on the beautiful island of Hawaii.
